El Calafate is a town in southern Argentina located on the southern margin of Lake Argentino, in the southwest of the Province of Santa Cruz. It has more than 20,000 stable inhabitants and its main economic activity is the tourism industry, constantly expanding due to its proximity to the Perito Moreno Glacier.
Its name is due to a typical thorny bush in southern Patagonia. In the spring it has yellow flowers and in summer purple fruits. According to tradition, who eats this fruit always returns to Patagonia.
The town of El Calafate was founded on December 7, 1927.
When do we consider it the best time to visit this town?
The Perito Moreno Glacier can be visited and seen all year. The best season to visit El Calafate runs from September to March. Although between April and August temperatures range between -6 and +12 degrees celcius. This is because it is surrounded by oceans.
